About the author:

Hi I'm Emma and I love minimalistic style, basic, comfy outfits and keeping only necessary items in my wardrobe. My daily work involves closet organization and basic style creation of functional and easy-to-wear outfits. I want to share this with you to help you simplify your life as well. 🤍✨

Closet storage ideas worth trying

a hanger full of clips

We’re starting off with a little twist on an ordinary hanger. This white hanger has a black wraparound attachment with a whole row of clips underneath.

Try a setup like this for small accessories you’d rather hang than tuck into a drawer. I’d use it to keep pairs of gloves together.

a spot for every bag

How pretty is this shelf setup? The upright dividers separate short stacks of folded clothes above and individual handbags below.

I love how each bag has its own little space.

Try adding dividers to one crowded shelf before changing your whole closet.

scarves around a ring

If you have lots of scarves, this one is for you. Small rings hold colorful scarves around the bottom of a large hoop hanging from a door hook.

The prints are all right there to choose from. No need to fold your favorite one into the bottom of a pile.

shoe rows on the door

I am obsessed with this use of the closet door. Four shallow holders line the inside, with shoes tucked upright into each row.

If you want to try something similar, check the clearance before adding holders. Your door still needs room to close with the shoes in place.

hangers down a chain

Don’t have much room left along your clothing rod? This chain lets several hangers sit below one another instead of spreading them all across the rail.

Try it with a small group of lightweight tops first. Leave enough space underneath so the lowest piece isn’t resting on the floor.

see-through clothing bins

This is actually one of my favorite ways to organize a tall shelf section. The matching bins hold folded clothes, with small labels on the fronts.

You can still see the colors inside. Give each bin a category that makes sense for your wardrobe rather than mixing a little of everything into each one.

two rods and low cubbies

Starting with an empty closet? This simple setup gives you two hanging rods and a low row of open cubbies.

I’d use the double hanging space for shorter pieces, then put shoes or small baskets below. Measure your hanging clothes before choosing the rod heights.

pool noodle boot inserts

Those bright blue inserts are such a clever little detail! Sections of pool noodle sit inside the brown boots to support the upright shafts.

If you’re collecting easy closet organization hacks, save this one. Cut the inserts to suit your boots rather than leaving a long piece sticking out of the top.

clothes sorted by color

I love this row of colors, especially the pink, orange and green in the middle. Light neutrals sit together on the left while blues and darker shades fill the right side.

Keep similar clothes together, then arrange each group by color if you want to try the same look. The shoes have their own shelf just above the hangers.

a pull-out project in progress

This one is a work-in-progress photo rather than a finished storage idea. Rows of sliding hardware are mounted across two vertical supports on the wall.

If you’re planning custom pull-out storage, save it as a starting reference. You’ll still need a complete plan for the attachments, spacing and mounting before building your own.

a belt on a wall hook

Prefer to hang your belts rather than roll them up? This brown belt hangs by its buckle from a wall-mounted hook, leaving the strap loose below.

Try the same idea for your other belts with separate hooks along an unused patch of closet wall. Leave enough room underneath for the ends to hang freely.

start with the clothing pile

Not every organizing idea starts with pretty containers. This before photo shows a loose pile of clothes on the floor, with no finished storage setup yet.

Start by sorting a pile like this into what you wear, what needs care and what you’re ready to pass along. Then decide how much storage the keepers actually need.

clear slots for small bags

How cute is this handbag shelf? Small bags stand upright between clear dividers, with their straps and chains tucked close.

This is a lovely option if your smaller bags disappear behind larger ones. I especially like being able to see each bag without moving the one beside it.

jeans filed in rows

This drawer may just be one of my favorites here. The jeans sit upright in divided rows instead of being piled flat on top of each other.

Fold yours to fit the depth of your drawer, then group similar shades together. Those narrow dividers keep the rows separate.

little hooks on a hanger

Here’s another way to give a hanger a different job. Small hooks run along both sloping sides of this one, leaving individual spots for hanging accessories.

I’d try a hanger designed like this for necklaces. Space them out so the chains don’t all gather in the same place.

separate compartments for shoes

If you’re looking for a way to gather loose sandals, this one is for you. The gray organizer has a grid of compartments, with shoes slotted upright inside.

Check the compartment sizes against your shoes before picking an organizer. The open top makes it easy to see what’s in each section.

pull-out trouser rows

I love these neat rows of trousers. Individual hangers sit along pull-out rails beneath the shelf, with pale pairs together and blue jeans grouped beside them.

This is a bigger update than adding a drawer divider, but it’s worth saving if you’re planning a closet fitting.

a tiny hanger connector

That little can tab has a new job! One opening sits over the upper hanger’s hook while the other holds a second hanger below it.

Try this with lightweight pieces you like wearing together. Choose a smooth, undamaged tab and keep any sharp edges away from your clothes.

matching cream hangers

Don’t want to change your whole storage setup? Keep it simple with matching hangers.

These cream ones line up along the rod above white, silver and darker pieces.

I love how tidy the repeated shape looks. You can start with just one section rather than replacing every hanger at once.

tees you can see

Last but definitely not least, we have this neatly filed T-shirt drawer. The upright folds show a little of each shirt, with lighter tees grouped on the left and darker ones on the right.

Try folding your tees to a similar width and placing them in rows. Keep the little front label if you like giving each drawer section a name.
