20 Garage Tool Storage Ideas for Hand Tools, Power Tools and More

Looking for garage tool storage ideas that leave you room to actually work? A wall of neatly lined-up wrenches is a lovely start, but there’s plenty here for drills, saws and those little screws that end up everywhere.

You can keep it simple with a small wall rack or go all out with cabinets and a long workbench. These pictures also include a few ways to store bulky garage gear so it doesn’t take over your tool area.

About the author:

Tool storage ideas worth saving

pegboard with a little shelf

We’re starting off strong with this tool-filled pegboard. I love how the smaller tools sit in little rows beneath the larger wrenches and pliers.

The narrow shelf at the bottom is worth keeping if you try a similar setup. It gives you another spot for pieces that aren’t hanging on hooks.

upright saw rack

Have a few handsaws taking up space on your bench? This narrow wall rack keeps them upright, with the handles resting near the bottom and the blades separated along the top.

I’d give a rack like this its own spot away from the tools you reach past every day.

red rolling tool drawers

How satisfying are these drawers? The wrenches, pliers and sockets have separate places instead of sitting in one big pile.

This red cart also has a flat worktop and wheels. Try drawer inserts arranged around your own tools rather than copying a layout that doesn’t fit your collection.

hand tools on horizontal slats

This hand-tool wall may just be one of my favorites here. I love the long row of chisels and the hand drills hanging above them.

The little holders vary with the tools, which is the detail to borrow. You don’t have to use the same hook for everything.

overhead space for bulky gear

Running out of wall space? These pictures show ceiling-mounted grid shelves, including one holding a ride-on toy and other bulky items rather than hand tools.

That’s an option for freeing up room around your tool station. Before choosing overhead storage, check its load rating, mounting requirements and clearance from the moving garage door.

power tools in hanging slots

I love this yellow-and-black tool station. Larger tools sit on top, batteries occupy the little shelves and a row of tools hangs underneath.

If you want to try the same arrangement, choose slots that fit your tool handles. Leave extra space below for longer attachments like the one shown here.

cords above the charging station

This setup has so many details worth saving. The orange and black cords hang in separate loops beside open tool shelves, with a charging station below.

My favorite part is the row of individual drill spaces underneath the counter. Try grouping your cords above your charging area too, while keeping the actual charging surface clear.

shovels on simple wall supports

Don’t want a whole cabinet for your garden tools? No problem!

This wall uses small projecting supports to hold shovels and other long-handled tools.

Some hang by their handles while others rest beneath their wider heads. Match each holder to the tool rather than spacing every support exactly alike.

a clear bench and wall cubbies

If you are looking for a setup with a little of everything, this one is for you. Small-parts bins and jars sit beside a central pegboard, with drawers and open shelves below the bench.

I especially love the clear worktop. Keep your everyday hand tools on the wall if you want to leave a similar space for projects.

clear bins and pull-out baskets

This is a nice option when your tools have to share the garage with everything else. Clear bins fill the upper shelves while baskets and boxes sit beneath the dark worktop.

The small tool board still has its own place in the middle. Add labels to your bins so you don’t have to pull each one down to check it.

a tool tower on wheels

There is so much going on here! Screwdrivers fill the top, pliers hang through the middle and wrenches line the bottom of this rolling tower.

Even the sides have holders. If you like this idea, start with the tools you use most rather than trying to fill every inch straight away.

blue cabinets and silver handles

Who says your garage cabinets have to be gray? I love this deep blue with the long silver-colored handles.

The tall cupboard and upper cabinets surround a tool board and pale counter. Keep a section of open shelving below if you want somewhere to put trays without opening a drawer.

small racks for screwdrivers and hammers

Don’t need an entire tool wall? These two small racks give you a simpler place to start.

One has rows of holes for screwdrivers while the other has an open slot beneath the hammer heads.

Choose hole and slot sizes around the tools you actually own. That matters more than squeezing in another row.

two rows of wrenches

I am obsessed with how neatly these wrenches are lined up. The slatted backing has two tool sections, with screwdrivers along the ledges and clear fastener boxes stacked at the right.

There are even plants on the top shelf. I’d borrow the separate boxes for small hardware, whether or not you add the greenery.

a hose holder with a nozzle hook

Sometimes one little holder is all you need. This coiled garden hose sits around a projecting support, with its spray nozzle hanging in the open center.

The separate nozzle spot is my favorite detail. Give attachments their own hook rather than leaving them on your workbench.

garden tools along wall rails

This is another long-handled tool setup, but there’s more room for the smaller extras too. Rakes and shovels hang beside pruning tools, gloves and a spool of twine.

Try keeping those little gardening essentials at one end of your rack. You can grab them without reaching between the shovel handles.

lit shelves and dark drawers

If you want to go all out with your workshop wall, take a look at this one. The lit shelves above the pegboard are gorgeous, especially beside the dark drawers and storage cases.

I love the long rows of wrenches. Borrow just the shelf lighting if you want a smaller change without replacing your whole setup.

bikes up on the wall

Bikes competing with your tools for floor space? This picture is about bike storage rather than tool storage, but it’s a useful idea for a shared garage.

The bikes hang vertically from individual wall hooks. If you try this, use mounts rated for your bikes and leave enough room to take each one down.

a pull-out cabinet for fasteners

Okay, this is such a good detail to save. The tall pull-out cabinet holds rows of black bins filled with screws and other small hardware.

Instead of one deep container to dig through, you get separate sections. I’d add a size label to the front of each bin to finish the arrangement.

gray cabinets around a tool bench

Last but definitely not least, we have this full garage setup. I love the central workbench tucked between the tall gray cupboards, with hand tools displayed right above it.

The ladder has its own horizontal spot higher on the wall. If you’re planning a whole garage layout, remember to leave space for those awkward long items too.
