I always kick snow everywhere trying to prop these up straight. Cross the skis like an X and step back a few feet before you shoot. The fresh snow around the base sells the whole thing!
Packed snow near the lodge never photographs half as well. I’ve learned that the hard way. A crooked ski ruins the whole shot, so double check before you walk off.

I’ve missed this shot more times than I’d like to admit. A friend needs to be low and ready before the skier carves through. Otherwise the powder spray gets missed entirely. I never plan this one, it just happens at the end of the day. Muddy, worn, sometimes still buckled; it tells its own little story. This is a two second setup that somehow always looks intentional! The scuffed leather adds more character than a clean boot ever could.
Snow Angel From Above
Snow angels shot from above hit differently than the regular ground level version, don’t you think? Someone needs to lie back in untouched snow while another person leans over a balcony or ledge.
